Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (http://www.clel.org) an advisory group to the Colorado State Library, announced the inaugural year of the CLEL Bell Picture Book Awards, a new children's literature award created to recognize picture books that provide excellent support of early literacy development in young children.

The Child Nutrition Division of the State Department of Education is seeking sponsors for this year’s Summer Food Service Program, which provides free meals for children, ages 1-18, who live in areas in need of economic assistance during school summer vacations.
In recent years the Commission has provided branded materials for libraries that sign up for the Bright Futures School Visits program. These materials are distributed during visits at elementary schools in order to increase student participation in the libraries' summer reading programs.

The Commission is now accepting applications for Bright Futures Summer Outreach Programs. These opportunities are designed to reach more children with summer reading programs, especially those considered “underserved.” Each program is designed to achieve specific outcomes and participating libraries must report results in the ICfL annual summer reading programs report.
A recently released report produced for the “Campaign for Grade-Level Reading” spotlights new initiatives in early childhood literacy programs that have “taken different approaches to technology, harnessing its power to assist teachers and parents in helping children learn to read”—including Idaho’s Routes to Reading “Storytime Online,” the DayByDayID.org and Tumblebooks<
