Letters About Literature Deadline Approaching!
The Deadline for Level 3 (Grades 9-12) submissions for Letters about Literature is coming up, but there is still time to enter! The contest, sponsored by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, is a writing and reading contest for students in grades 4-12 in which they write a letters to the author (living or dead) of a book that affected them personally. This contest could be an excellent project for a class or for individual students.
For those who would make a class project of Letters About Literature, there is a Teacher's Guide with lots useful suggestions and examples. Bear in mind, however, that the guide was written in 2006 and does not list the most up to date information about the contest, nor does it reference the Common Core Standards. Clearly, participating in this contest supports many Idaho Core Standards for Reading Literature and Writing for grades 4-12.
Prizes are awarded in three categories on the state and national level. Go to Letters About Literature on the Library of Congress website and read some of the past winners' letters - don't forget to check out the envelope art! Then read the Rules and Guidelines to find out how your students or an entire class can enter.
December 10, 2013 -Entry deadline for Level 3 (Grades 9-12).
January 10, 2014 - Entry deadline for Level 1 (Grades 4-6) and Level 2 (Grades 7 & 8).
