Court Ordered Volunteers: Good or Bad Idea?

A useful blog summarizing the pros and cons (no pun intended) of using court ordered volunteers to participate in community service.  A couple points that stood out to me:

1. The organization is not required to accept the volunteers so vet them as carefully as you would any potential volunteer.
2. Have policies that specifically address how the workers will be used, who will supervise them, and who will be aware of their offenses.
3. Like any volunteer, a court ordered one can work out well and even continue to volunteer at the end of his/her court ordered time.  Their success is at least partially dependent on both the types of jobs they do and the environment in which they work.
