Volunteering: Two Different Perspectives
Two different aspects of the benefits of volunteering are currently posted on the VolunteerMatch website. The 2011 VolunteerMatch annual report displays statistical information in a visual "infographic". This one page summary of the quantitative results of volunteering nationwide visually demonstrates how important volunteers are to many non-profit organizations.
A more qualitative approach can be seen in VolunteerMatch's nonprofit spotlight on Carla Lehn from the California State Library. Carla has worked with California's public libraries since 2008 to increase their engagement of volunteers. Carla uses the term engagement instead of management because she believes identifying volunteers' talents and matching them to pertinent tasks increases the impact of their volunteering. The Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) is modeling California's "Get Involved: Powered by Your Library" program because staff recognizes the contributions volunteers make at ICfL and want to extend them to libraries statewide.
