Do You Cha-Cha?
I've written and discarded 4 posts about Cha-Cha. I wasn't satisfied that my explanation of the service would give readers a good picture of how really cool Cha-Cha can be. So I had an idea that maybe I can ask you to try something without telling you all about it. Get out your cell phone!
Hope every texting librarian in Idaho tries this:
Text cha-cha (242-242)a question in plain English. You might try asking for your library's phone number, or ask for the actor's name who played the skipper on Gilligan's Island. You might want to ask who wrote a certain book.
You'll get two responses to your first question. One will welcome you to Cha-Cha, the next will answer your question.
Then go look up Cha-Cha on the internet and find out how they do it.
My family and I used Cha-Cha extensively on our Oregon coast vacation to decide where to stay, where to eat, what the weather would be, answer trivial disputes, etc.
Try it -- then report back. I'd like to know what you all think. (Especially those who work with digital natives.)

Cha Cha
I LOVE Cha Cha But im a lil confussed cuz ill get a txt sayin tht it dnt cost but then ill get a txt tht says standard retes apply and i need to kno if it cost if u have unlimited?i dnt wanna run the bill up mi parents will be mad lol but please answer this cuz i need to kno soon b4 its too late.
The "it doesn't cost" most
The "it doesn't cost" most likely applies to the Cha Cha service itself, but the "standard rates apply" probably has to do with the text message service rates imposed by your service provider. Those are two separate things. A text message is a text message and you'll likely be charged for it, even if you send that text to a service that doesn't charge for you to take advantage of it.
Wow!
I'll have to try this for one of those moments when I'm having a conversation and we all disagree about what the capitol city of New Hampshire is and there is no computer around. Thanks for pointing out this service! Looks fun!
Cha-Cha and More at Region Four
Attendees at the ILA Region 4 spring conference will get to play with Cha-Cha, google SMS and various other gadget driven goodies at a session called "Gadget Lab." Three of us from JPL and an assortment of young friends are bringing gadgets (including cell phones) to share with participants for some hands on time. We'll have eBook readers, MP3 players, Ipod apps, tiny gaming devices, and the ever-useful and fun cell phones. I can't wait!
