National Gaming Day Debriefing, or How One Library Hosted a Big Event: in ten installments, Chapter 4
NGD minus 7 days: Get commitment from best little coffee-house in Jerome for free cookie cards for all Pictureka! players. Volunteers are distributing fliers as fast as we can make them. They're telling friends, posting bulletins on MySpace, and recruiting more volunteers. Get PSAs out to schools. Write plea letter for Friends of the Library to buy the Wii, print and copy the ALA thing that tells why they support gaming in libraries to support plea.
Worry about DDR for Xbox and Wii guitar. Discover that we don't have enough wiimotes. Worry about that, too. Remember that gamers prefer gamecube controllers for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While at circ desk, lady comes in with check for $150. and says her church sponsored two teen summer reading events, but the check never cleared. I say that we never received the check. After thanking her and giving her NGD fliers, I give the check to director and claim it for guitar, DDR, and gamecube controllers. She claims it to pay for the Wii. We strike a deal: The check will go for console if the Friends decline request. Otherwise, it goes for the still missing equipment for much-advertised events. Register for NGD live national tournament and swallow hard. Wonder why people around here think I'm tech savvy, and worry that I won't be able to learn it all before the big day.
Staff seems understanding about handling my desk duty as the NGD phone calls and visits increase. Drink too much coffee. Slow down on coffee after feeling lump in mouth and spitting out fly and coffee on library carpet.
