National Gaming Day Debriefing, or How One Library Hosted a Big Event: in ten installments, Chapter 5

NGD Super Smash Bros. Tournament Boss

NGD minus 6 days: Set up my personal Wii in library with Wii Sports. Director and Assistant Director bowl. Assistant Director calls out "STRIKE!" I laugh and playfully shush her, as she is a member of the shushing generation (though she's not a practicing shusher anymore.) Friends meet. I make my plea and answer questions such as "how does gaming increase circulation?" Actually, a Friend answers that question; "There are books based on video games, and books about how to beat video games, and that is very motivating to young people who don't otherwise read for pleasure." I invite Friends to try Wii bowling after meeting. None do. Friends approve purchase and write check before meeting is over! Talk to teens after school. Get teen event photographer, who is one of the PDA couple. nervously await more info about how to run live tournament. Remind same two teens that PDA in the library is gross. Tell them to stop or go away. Youngest daughter creates Pictureka! poster with boxes to sign -- this to easily count players for national record setting attempt. Wonder if I've seen instructions for posting this and national high score events for Rock Band and DDR. Worry that we won't have full bands because of singing in a crowd. Begin to worry that no one will come. Assistant director does outreach at senior center, invites them to participate in NGD and leaves fliers. Radio stations not getting back to director about possible live remote. Don't worry about this because I don't have any more worry space in my head.

Go shopping for needed equipment with surprise check money after work. End at Game Stop, find Wii Guitar ($59!) and discover that DDR for Xbox 360 is WAY more expensive than DDR for PS2. Buy Wii guitar, DDR for PS2 (used), and one classic controller. Run out of the surprise check money. Buy three classic controllers for my personal Wii, which I rationalize by telling myself that my family will want them to play our new Super Smash Bros. game. Make mental note that library needs to find way to buy PS2 console and Rock Band game and instruments in order to use the stuff I just bought for the library. Worry that I can't find PS2 console to borrow before NGD. Mental note to ask Tournament Town. Reserve city projector for DDR. Tummy not feeling so good. Probably still too much coffee, maybe some nerves.

I really hope that the event turned out great!!
From the enthusiasm you show in this post, that should have translated over to a major success.
