National Gaming Day Debriefing, or How One Library Hosted a Big Event: in ten installments, Chapter 7
NGD minus 3 days: Worry about the live tournament. Tell lovely purple-haired daughter that her job will be the computer end of managing our participation in tournament. Give her all of the info received to date -- still not enough to have any confidence that we can pull it off.
Times-News publishes story of upcoming NGD event. Use ALA's canned press release, tweaked for our plans. Send ALA rep Jenny a link to article as requested, she sends back nice reply with praise for involving local donors.
Repeat performance of fly and coffee fiasco, but manage to spit combo back into cup this time. Go coffee-less the rest of the day. Yawn a lot; get chided for making co-workers yawn. Have stern talk with teen couple about how PDA is disrespecting all three of the teen space rules: "respect yourself, respect others, respect the space." Get the same "Sorry, O.K." as before. Still expect that behavior will improve. Reflect upon this kind of optimism being at the root of me ending up in serving digital natives in the first place. Wish I was younger, just for the energy factor.
Call Tournament Town several times to ask to borrow PS2 rather than Xbox 360 for DDR. No answer. Suspect owner is hunting, as he was in full camo including his face when I first met him. One volunteer in early 20's is telling me just how to do each and every thing. Appreciate input, but not changing ANYTHING that is already figured out. GRRRR! Worry some more about PS2.
Go to bed too early because of exhaustion, wake up at 1:00 A.M. and make lists and write agenda for A.M. volunteer meeting on NGD. Go back to sleep about 4:30 A.M.
