National Gaming Day Debriefing, or How One Library Hosted a Big Event: in ten installments, Chapter 8

NGD @ JPL Pictureka!

NGD minus 2 days: Get email with more info on video game events. Feel like I need two whole days to figure the tech stuff out. Worry about attendance. Still can't reach Tournament Town and really worrying about DDR. Director announces that she doesn't want NGD participants to have any reason to leave -- so library will be selling hot dog, chips & soda meals for $2. Brain spins for a moment until she says she will make it happen. Love my director more than ever at this moment. Love entire staff. Have vision of library brimming over with happy people playing games and eating hot dogs. Vision reminds me to worry about attendance.

Prepare stuff for Dungeon Master. Assistant director enlarges board game rules for about a dozen games. Talk to teens after school. Everyone seems to know what to do. Loan library camera to teen NGD photographer so she can get familiar with it. Remind her that NOBODY wants to see physical demonstrations of how much she and her boyfriend <3 each other. Director says, "get a room!". Decide that flies shouldn't hold such power over me and drink coffee all day without straining it through my teeth. All staff pitching in by fielding calls and questions, and being extra nice about my stuff being all over the library work spaces.

Get scolded by very helpful 20something volunteer for not replying to text during work day. Tell him that I answer txts and voicemail after work. Get either evil eye or rolled eyes - can't exactly tell because of brim of personal statement type hat. Start answering his question a few minutes later, but stop when I realize he is talking to his blue-tooth device which is apparently implanted in his ear. Wonder again why anyone would think that this "woman of a certain age" is all knowing and perfectly comfortable in all things tech.

Don't sleep well, but am compensated by a 3 A.M. warm milk and toast fest with my also sleepless daughter and grandbaby. We share the kind of magic half hour that money can't buy.
