National Gaming Day Debriefing, or How One Library Hosted a Big Event: in ten installments, Chapter 1

NGD@JPL Magic: the gathering

NGD minus 11 days: Pictureka! arrives in the library mail. I get assignment late in the afternoon from director to make it happen. She says, "It doesn't have to be a big deal." I think she forgot who she was talking to. Programs are big deals to programmers. I finish the day doing regular duties and current projects, and clear my mind and desk to make room for NGD. This day doesn't count in the 10 day countdown on account of the day being nearly over. I mourn a little over the projects I'll be neglecting for the next ten days, then get over it and start worrying about how I'm going to make it happen big in very little time.

NGD minus 10 days: During desk duty, ask everyone who comes near if they have a console and/or game Wii need. Er,...we need. Spend the rest of the day reading everything I can find online: www.ilovelibraries.org/gaming Links from ALA's gaming resource page Also make phone calls and send emails looking for games, consoles, equipment, volunteers, and prizes. Create 1/2 sheet fliers, print them and place them at circ desk to go in bags at check-out. After school, talk to a whole bunch of teens and they start texting and calling friends who might help. I tell two of them that PDA in the library is uber yucky. Flies in library annoy me as I work. I think people who use the meeting rooms in the evenings prop the doors open, though we post nice signs asking them not to. Shoo flies while working at computer and try to ignore them. At home, I recruit my family as volunteers and prioritize tomorrow's activities.
