The Tough Teens
A short story: Long ago, a library started working with teens to provide a space, services, and programs for them and their peers. It all proved popular. Library policiies evolved, making the library a comfortable and welcoming third place for teens (and kids, and others who like a comfortable free place to meet and hang out where they aren't expected to buy anything.)
Sometimes, some individuals in the large after school crowd got themselves temporarily kicked out for blatant and repeated disregard for the teen space's three rules -- Respect yourself, Respect others, Respect the space -- and someone in the library staff, volunteer, or governance crowd would say something to the effect that "we don't need him/her in our library..." (about the over-exuberant youngster.) But other library staff disagreed. They actively sought to involve those particular teens in making decisions about the space, dreaming up and participating in programs, helping out as volunteers, and being leaders in their crowds.
Most of these singled-out "bad teens" gained a sense of ownership, becoming passionate guardians of the three rules, advocates and participants in teen library stuff, and friends of the library in the truest sense.
Moral of this story: Real cooperation stems from engagement rather than authority.

I was a tough teen!
I would have loved, loved, loved your library as a teen. As a matter of fact, I love your library as an adult!
Re: I was a tough teen
I was tough myself... maybe tough "former" teens are a natural fit for serving tough teens? And thanks. I love that you love my library!
