What I'm Reading

O.K., I'll address the "blog topic of the moment" in hopes that others will too. The ICFL Community blog has so so much potential -- Let's all use it! As I write this, there are eight "guests" who are at this moment visiting the community blog. After you've read, log in and post what you're reading. Please? And all of you other community members -- log in and post! Rah Rah Rah!

So here is what I'm reading: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. The premise is that terrorists have blown up a bridge in San Francisco and 17 year old Marcus and three of his alternative reality gaming team are picked up by Homeland Security. When Markus is finally released, he uses technology to fight back against the Patriot Atc 2 and the government's abusive invasions into everybody's everyday life.

Little Brother is a fast paced and exciting read. Still, I found myself re-reading passages dealing with security, secrecy, and tracking technologies that exist and are used now. I'm even convinced to do a little more in defense of my own privacy.

Cory Doctorow is very interesting himself. He releases all of his books as ebooks with creative commons licensing at the same time they are released in book format. So you can get them for free, or you can pay for them. He’s not a fan of DRM, and thinks that he doesn’t lose money by giving books away. I’m betting he’s right. Our library has a hardback copy of Little Brother, and I have an eBook copy on my iPod. My husband has ordered another book by this author, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, which I have on my iPod also. (I don’t share very well, so until he gets an iPod Touch of his own, he’ll be buying paper books.)

Your turn! What are you reading?

    what i'm reading...

For fun I've been reading Isabel Allende's books. I also just made everyone I know read Jordan Crane's The Clouds Above. But I'm most excited about reading the new David Sedaris on ebook.

    Good Stuff

I love Isabel Allende. I read Eva Luna with a book group at my library, after having read The Stories of Eva Luna. The latter is so much more, er, earthy than the former. Not having known that, I participated in the group for this book -- mostly to see the how the group would react. Even though Eva Luna is quite tame compared, there were strong and varied reactions.

What kind of eBook reader do you use?

    Oops.

I should have replied to this long ago, but I'm getting the ropes at the new job!

I meant to say eaudiobook. However, speaking of ebooks - I was thinking that those new $200 laptops (there is one coming out later this year with a touch screen) might be the absolute BEST thing for reading books! They weigh like 1.3 pounds, and if we're lucky we'll be able to turn the pages by touching the screen, and surf the web when we're done! Wow! Wishful thinking...

You can see more about it here.

I will read Eva Luna next!

    The glory of reading

Unfortunately, what I read changes so quickly that I can barely keep it updated anywhere. I try to keep it updated on www.goodreads.com, so check me out there!

Currently I'm reading Open Range, by Lauran Paine, for our book club. What I would like to be reading is Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson or Delicious by Sherry Thomas.

    what I am reading...

I am reading A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz which is the first book by this Australian author. This novel is an epic comedy of crime, families and the human condition. I haven't enjoyed a book this much since Confederacy of Dunces.

'my lists' on my OCLC account

I started noting books read on a list in my OCLC account, and took a break from my paper reading journal. I'm better at listing than writing reviews, but the OCLC account offers me the option for writing reviews. And it's portable whenever/wherever I want to consult it. Best recent read (all on my list, which is up to 28 since October):
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer; Annie Barrows
    Eating heaven
    by Jennie Shortridge
The story of Edgar Sawtelle : a novel
    by David Wroblewski
