LiLI Databases

The LiLI Databases (LiLI-D) are online services providing full-text articles from magazines, professional journals, newspapers, and reference books free to all Idaho residents. Some of the databases for 2009 are new!

There's something for everyone - K-12 students, researchers, consumers - everyone! Best of all, LiLI is free to all Idahoans.

To start using LiLI, go to www.lili.org and get the password. Then login to the LiLI-D service. You'll find links to numerous databases covering a wide range of subjects.

The LiLI Databases are brought to you by the Idaho Commission for Libraries with additional from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

LiLI-D Support

Educator Resources
Searching Tips and Fact Sheets
Branding LiLI-D on Your Library Website
Marketing LiLI-D in Your Library
LiLI-D Tutorials, Training and Tips

Resources by Vendor: Technical Support, Account Creation and Customer Service

EBSCOHost (Automobile Reference Center, Book Collection: Nonfiction, Book Index with Reviews)

Gale Cengage Learning (Gale Virtual Reference Library)

ProQuest (ProQuest Central, eLibrary, National Newspapers)

H.W. Wilson (Art Museum Image Gallery)

Why Sign Up for an Account?

While libraries are able to direct their patrons to log into the LiLI databases through the LiLI Portal, in some cases libraries need to sign-up for accounts of their own. These accounts are free and allow libraries to customize the databases to better serve their populations.

Digital collection

The National Library Service (NLS) is in the process of converting the books and magazines it circulates from analog to digital format. The digital format has many advantages including:

 Improved sound quality;

 A lighter, easier to use player;

The ability to download books and magazines from a website if desired

During the conversion, books and magazines will be available in both analog and digital format for several years. Analog books will continue to be circulated on cassettes, and digital books will be circulated on cartridges, or by downloading them to be played on a compatible player.

Approximately 16,000 titles are currently available in digital format with approximately 2,000 titles to be added per year. Talking Book Service (TBS) users can register to search and download books from BARD, the digital database.

BARD registration form
BARD registration instructions
Downloading files from BARD

Players:
Since portions of the NLS collection will not be available in digital format on a cartridge, users are encouraged to keep cassette players to play titles available only in cassette format, even after digital players are received. Magazines will only be circulated on cassettes, but are available for download from BARD.

Digital players will be distributed in quantities of 120 per month, begining October 2009. Federal law mandates that veterans receive priority in requesting players. After all veterans requesting digital players have received theirs, players will be sent to any interested TBS user. To request a player, contact TBS at 1 (800) 458-3271 or email: talkingbooks@libraries.idaho.gov and ask to be added to the player waiting list.

Player instructions are included with each player. For a detailed description of the player and more information about BARD, listen to a 60-minute podcast with Judith Dixon, Consumer Relations Officer at the NLS.

Several commercial players compatible with the NLS digital format are available for purchase. Because each user's needs are different, the Talking Book Service does not recommend any specific player. Currently, the following players are available:

APH Braille Plus Mobile Manager

HIMS BookSense

Humanware Victor Reader Stream

LevelStar Icon

PLEXTALK Pocket PTP1

Player software: The player software will be updated as improvements are made. The most current version is incorporated into new digital books as they are produced. The player software is then updated when the book is played. The most current software version can also be downloaded at: http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM

Cartridge Purchase:
Cartridges for playing books downloaded from BARD will be available for purchase from several commercial vendors. Due to the cartridge shape, a cable is also needed to connect the cartridge to the USB port on your computer. The following vendors currently have the cartridges available for purchase. Please contact the vendors. The Talking Book Service does not plan to stock the cartridges for sale to users.

Independent Living Aids

New Technologies and Literacies for Teens

The Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL) will offer public and school librarians an exciting opportunity this winter. A cohort of 20 people will participate in an online class February 1-28, 2010 to learn how teens’ use of technology to play, learn, and create improves their text-based literacy skills. This group of people will meet face-to-face in Boise before and after the online course. ICFL will pay the course registration fee, plus travel and related expenses of the two meetings in Boise. Participants must enroll with a partner from another library. Partners can be from the same or different type of library.

Note: This course will require at least 3 hours per week to complete. Enrollees who do not present a program during Teen Tech Week (March 7-13, 2010) will not be reimbursed for travel to the meetings in Boise.

Registration Deadline: Friday, December 18, 2009. A confirmation will be sent by Monday, December 28, 2009.

School Library Partnerships

School Library Partnerships: Building strong libraries, building powerful students

is a collaborative effort which includes the Idaho Commission for Libraries, Idaho Parent-Teacher Association, Idaho school libraries, BSU Albertsons Library and the Department of Education. The focus of this venture is to bring together parents, educators, and administrators to advocate for and understand the value of school librarians, paraprofessionals, and materials. Partnerships, 21st Century learning tools, and fun are part of the mix too.

Events

1. Partnerships & Conversations: November & December

Join us at a school library near you to talk about why your library is essential to student success. Find out how to identify partnerships to enhance your library’s resources and explore 21st century learning tools. Best of all, the two-hour sessions are designed to allow you enough time to join the session even if you are a little late. They will end on time.

Extra credit (a Flip video camera for your library) is yours if you bring a parent and an administrator (or designee) with you. Plus there will be give-aways and treats!

Librarians Register Today!

If you are going for extra credit (bringing along a parent and administrator/designee), be sure and have their name and email address (if available) when you register.

Places, Dates and Times

Agenda

Frequently Asked Questions

Letter to school principals

Letter to school librarians
