Rethinking Resource Sharing

Today and tomorrow, I'm at the Rethinking Resource Sharing Forum in Chicago.  So far this morning we've heard a presentation from Michael Stephens Tame the Web.  He spoke about trendspotting, current trends we should look at:

  • People want to talk to each other
  • User centered service
  • Convergences
  • Content culture
  • Redefining LIS jobs
  • Openness & Sharing
  • Participatory Culture
  • Experience & Play
  • Trust

We also heard from John Bodfish (OCLC), who showed a demonostration of a protype of something we're calling "GET IT". It's a broswer plug-in/widget that will find data in HTML coding like ISBNs, UPCs, or other standard numbers and link them with libraries or commercial sites.  It puts the library out there where the user is and draws them in. It's library service in the user's world. This is being created in the spirit of open source. It needs some "pretty-fying" but will be soon out there for users to USE!

Currently amid a great discussion about Cracking the Culture.  How do we change the face of resource sharing and library service while operating in our current cultures?  Are our organizations operating in a culture that is open to trying these new delivery methods?  Is it a user-centered culture? A user-friendly culture?
