Accomplishments last year:

Chair Elect (Vice Chair)! - Laurie Franics, BYU Idaho

Proposed Revisions to the Division’s By-laws:

1. Removed position of a Secretary
2. Passed duties of previous secretary position to the Vice-Chair/Chair-elect
3. Terms of office: Officers serve one year as Vice Chair, then one year as  Chair.  This is done to encourage more participation. It is changed from the previous two-year terms for the positions.

Voting on the proposed revisions:  Passed unanimously.

Goals for Next Year

Special Librarians Membership:
What are the types and names of special libraries in Idaho?
What are some ways that we can get them involved in ILA?
What things would special librarians bring to ILA that public, school, and academic librarians do not?

Conversation:

What can ILA offer to those special librarians?  There’s a lot of competition for one’s professional development time and funds.  SLA and the Medical Library Association and Law Library organizations are very strong.  What does ILA have to offer them that would make it worth their while (time, cost) to participate in ILA and attend conferences.

Participants shared the names of some special libraries that the Division might want to reach out to.

Others shared that it’s difficult to identify and find programs of interest to special library members.

Smaller libraries and other types of libraries are interested in learning more about things like archives and issues that special libraries have more experience with.

Other Goals for the Division?

Has the Division ever had its own retreat or event where programs were focused more specifically on their special needs.  Possibly something that would be of interest to both academic and special libraries. Need to consider the risk that having a seperate event might keep some from attending the Annual Conference, especially if their travel budgets are retricted.  If something was done, keep sessions longer than an hour so that there’s time to go into more detail.  Or, keep it like a retreat with some in depth content and opportunities to network w/ each other.  Multi-tracks at one event versus alternating topics one-per-year.

Suggestion: instead of face-to-face, maybe consider some online conferencing.

Noted:  Academic attendance at this conference is quite good, need to congratulate ourselves.  But, a possible goal might be increasing membership in the Division. 2006, there were 67 members out of 572 total members.

Possible Goal:  Increasing participation of Division Membership.

We need to focus on the benefits of year-round participation.  Not just attending the conference. not just paying an ILA member fee.  But doing BOTH.

Ideas - Possible electronic newsletter; some way to keep the connections flowing year-round.

Linnea Marshall (U of I) - Report on Idaho NACO Funnel

NACO Funnel - consists of 6 institutional members, 12 catalogers.  Had training last year.  Participants are contributing Idaho Name Authority records.   They created 252 Name Authority Records in first year.  They worked on some additional records.

Upcoming Subject Cataloging training- July 18-19th, 2007, at Boise State University.  This is a follow up to the NACO training.  The Subject Authority training is SACO.  They are going to apply for a Continuing Education grant through LSTA (ICFL).  Training will focus on LC subject headings. Barbara asks that folks start spreading the word that the training will take place.  Notices will be going out via LibIdaho.   This workshop is the pre-cursor to the SACO training.

Ideas for Workshops of interest to Division Members for 2007’s ILA Annual Conference in Nampa:

  • How to use End Note and ReferenceWorks and/or other bibliographic citation tools. Maybe contact David Hall at BSU (professor), who might be a candidate to teach that.
  • Library Instruction/Bibliographic Instruction/Info Literacy - how do you get beyond teaching them how to search and get to the ‘how to find.’
  • Electronic Resource Management
  • Copyright - thorough discussion, especially in light of technology changes
  • Google Scholar - now that’s been around a couple years, is it really worth using?
  • Scholarly communication - working w/ faculty on those issues
  • Reaching faculty: what are they looking for? What can we do for them?
  • Collection development - in light on electronic resources
  • New LiLI Databases
  • Training at various levels of staff
  • How new types of media are used or not used. How are we making them accessible (streaming media). Things beyond the print.
  • Continuing the conversation about Institutional Repositories that began during Kay Flower’s presentation yesterday.

Get other ideas to Phil Homan before November as suggestions will be forwarded to the Conference Chair at the November ILA Board Meeting.

News from the Division Membership

  • CSI library now has 3 MLS librarians and has expanded their electronic collections with resources from NetLibrary.  They are also moving their LIS courses online.
  • BSU - Marilyn Moody is the new Dean of of the Albertson’s Library at Boise State University.  Adrien Taylor is retiring next week.  Beverly Miller is retiring.  And Janet Davis (formerly Strong) will be retiring after 2006.
  • University of Idaho - Newest librarian is Ben Hunter (Reference Libn).  Ron Force retired and Lynn Baird is currently the Interim Dean of Library Services.  Also a number of new librarians on staff.  Noted that mostly due to retirements.
  • Idaho State University - Leonard Hitchcock retired.  Currently have one vacancy.

Idea:  Wonder if we might have some sort of informal liaison between the Division and the academic institutions in Idaho.  They could provide info about ILA to new staff and share news back and forth between library and ILA.

Idea: Would also like to see the organization reach out more to support staff instead of focusing on the faculty in academic libraries.
