The User is Not Broken … Read this

Karen Schneider at Free Range Librarian posted a very thought-provoking piece that we all need to read. Go read “The Users is Not Broken.”

Just a small taste of what you will read:

You cannot change the user, but you can transform the user experience to meet the user.

Meet people where they are–not where you want them to be.

The user is not “remote.” You, the librarian, are remote, and it is your job to close that gap.

The average library decision about implementing new technologies takes longer than the average life cycle for new technologies.

Thank you for linking to this and helping to spread it to the Idaho library community. Truly, everyone involved with libraries needs to give this “manifesto” a thorough reading and rereading.

Once you’re done with that, follow up with We Are Broken, Not “Them” by Michelle Boule. There’s some great additions on her list.

Ultimately, the question isn’t whether we can talk the talk, but can we walk the walk?
