Here’s something for your patrons doing genealogy research. The Genealogy Guys have a weekly podcast to discuss genealogy.  The podcast is a 30-minute long mp3 file.  The two genealogy guys, George G. Morgan and Drew Smith, have a conversation that includes helpful hints, research ideas, reviews of genealogy software, and much more.  It’s very easy to listen to: listen through your Web browser plugin or download the file to experience on your portable mp3 playing device.

Disclaimer: These gentleman are definitely avid genealogists. They are also friends of mine, so I admit I might be biased.

During the December 18th podcast Drew talks about using GenSmarts with his genealogy databse and George shares 5 things to learn about your library to make you a better
researcher. Those 5 things include:

  1. Learn
to use how to use the online catalog.
  2. Understand
    how the collection is organized.
  3. Use the pathfinders created by the library.
  4. Get to know what subscription
    databases your library has available.
  5. Use Interlibrary
    Loan.

Details about each of these items can be heard in the podcast.

As a bonus, they suggest Tip #6 is to give your librarian plenty of chocolate.

Shameless promotion:  George G. Morgan is the author of the best-selling genealogy book “How to Do Everything with Your Genealogy.”
