About the Project

School Library Partnerships: Building strong libraries, building powerful students
is a collaborative effort which includes the Idaho Commission for Libraries, Idaho Parent-Teacher Association,Idaho school libraries, BSU Albertsons Library and the Department of Education. The focus of this venture is to bring together parents, educators, and administrators to advocate for and understand the value of school librarians, paraprofessionals, and materials. Past Events

Partnering to Shape 21st Century Learners: February & April, 2010

Three regional one-day conferences faciliated by the Washingon Moms were held in Coeur d'Alene, Pocatello and Boise. These sessions expanded the focus of building partnerships, building powerful students by bringing together school librarians, administrators and parents. During the sessions participants further explored building partnerships and discussed the Idaho School Impact Study findings. Lisa Layera Brunkan and Susan McBurney, co-founders of The Washington Coalition for School Libraries & Information Technology (aka the Washington Moms) provided motivation and tools for the participants to create a blueprint for developing their 21st century library. In 2009 the Washington Moms led a grass-roots campaign in Washington State to raise the awareness of the importance of libraries on student academic success.

Partnerships & Conversations: November & December 2009

In November and December 2009, we held a series of small group gatherings, Partnerships and Conversations, in 15 school library venues across the state. More than 150 school librarians invited administrators and parents to explore the use of 21st century skill tools in the classroom. They also worked in teams to develop partnership projects to benefit the school library media center. The short program focused on one popular 21st century tool, the FlipCam. As a tool, FlipCams serve a catalyst to create unlimited possibilities for bring the school community together to apply and create new knowledge. Projects included reading challenges, book reviews, behavior role modeling, documenting class projects, demonstrating database searches, book fair promotions, and more. See workshop handouts, resources, and more here.

Building Partnerships: April 2010

In April of 2010 at the statewide meeting of the Idaho PTA, parents and teachers will get an update on the project.
