Why do long URLs break a page's layout?
- Question: Why is it that when I enter a long web site address (URL) into the BODY section of a page or book page, the spacing of the third column is misaligned.
- Answer: This has to with the theme's style sheet (CSS) properties. The third column is set to float to the right of the middle section no matter how wide it is. So when a long URL is entered, the third column automatically adjusts to be to the right of the widest point of the page.
- Resolution: One way to get around this issues is to put a line break in the middle of the URL by holding down the shift key and pressing enter (<SHIFT><ENTER>). This does not effect the link properties and simply drops all information after the break down a line.
- Resolution: Another way to solve this is to use a link phrase instead of the actual link. For example, the EBSCO persistent link to the Digital Textbooks for Digital Natives article by Lauren Barack is http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&an=19582927. Instead of listing out this long URL, a hyperlink could be used on the link phrase Digital Textbooks for Digital Natives. When in the editor, highlight the desired phrase and press the
icon. Enter in the LINK URL and a TITLE in the appropriate fields.
