Working: Making a Living, Making a Life
"Working" looks at how the jobs we perform shape our identities. Whether in the quest for the "American Dream" or just making ends meet, work also may provide a more intangible reward--self esteem.
“Making a Living, Making a Life: Work and Its Rewards in a Changing America,” was originally developed for the national Let's Talk About It project by Joseph Parisi, American Library Association, © 1984. Several additional books have been added to the series.
Books for this series include:
Growing Up by Russell Baker
The Professor’s House by Willa Cather
The Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder
Empire Falls by Richard Russo
Cliff Walk: A Memoir of a Job Lost and a Life Found by Don Snyder
Read an essay developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities for the Conversation of American Pluralism called "A Nation that Works."
