I'm not sure I'm a "real" librarian based on altruistic motives. It would be more accurate to say I LOVE to use libraries. If you love a bargain how can you NOT love libraries? My thing for libraries started when I was child moving around the country. I became a reader by necessity and libraries were my escape. Soon it was a habit I couldn't break.
As an adult the library was my means to explore and learn new skills. I discovered I had a passion for research and libraries provided me with the opportunity to increase those skills and gain extensive expertise. Along the way I learned a handful of other quirky and useful skills, such as Internet searching, basic patents and trademarks research for inventors, how to assist small business startups, doing storytelling WITHOUT using puppets but maybe wearing costumes or incorporating crafts. Libraries have been my vehicle for keeping me engaged (translation: please don't let me get bored!) AND providing a paycheck!
Fortunately this type of behavior also benefited whichever community I was working in at the time - your basic symbiotic relationship - so I guess my occupation makes me a library supporter. And 30 plus years later I'm still hanging out at libraries...trying to stay current with trends and demands.
