E-Rate Comments

The E-Rate program helps connect libraries and schools to the internet at discounted rates. On June 25, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) opened a review of the E-Rate program. The FCC is seeking feedback from the public before they make their final decision on the program’s future. Follow the guide below to access the comment portal.

The FCC’s proposal (PDF) asks, among other things, whether the E-Rate program should be scaled back or wound down now that most schools and libraries are connected, whether funding should come with student screen-time restrictions or parental opt-outs, and whether lower-discount applicants should lose eligibility.

Nearly every library and school in Idaho relies on E-Rate funding to provide high-speed internet to students, teachers, and community members. E-Rate is funded from phone and internet usage fees, not tax dollars.

In today’s world, there are still hard costs associated with providing the connectivity and tech necessary for students, teachers, and libraries to effectively function and serve their communities.

If E-Rate is discontinued, schools and libraries would have to greatly reduce other services to ensure this basic utility is still provided.

Take the time to comment to the FCC that your library – and all of the schools and libraries in Idaho – need E-Rate. A comment does not need to address every question in the proceeding. A brief response focused on one issue or local example can be useful.
