In 1901, the Idaho State Library was established by the Idaho legislature to organize new libraries and improve existing ones. Traveling libraries provided reading materials to the many mining communities and new towns that were springing up across the state.

The name and mission of the State Library changed in 2006 when it became the Idaho Commission for Libraries, the state’s library development agency. The ICfL builds the capacity of the more than 850 public, school, academic, and special libraries in Idaho to best serve their communities.

The ICfL assists library staff and trustees in many areas,  including grants, continuing education, website/tech support, and services/materials for youth, teens, and adults.
