Library Statistics

Overview

The Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) releases an annual compilation of statistical data from all Idaho public libraries.

Libraries complete a Public Library Survey between October and January of each year. The survey is a product of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Every state and territory has participated in the nationwide survey since 1988. Changes to the survey are presented to every state for a vote before they are put into effect. These changes normally take three to five years to be completely realized.

This survey data is useful to local, regional, state, and federal decisionmakers who are responsible for ensuring libraries remain able to provide the very best programs and services. Statistics are helpful when library directors and trustees want to:

  • Track their own library activity from year to year
  • Compare their information to libraries of a similar size or governance structure
  • Support budget requests
  • Analyze the needs of their community
  • Plan how the library will serve the community in the future
