Idaho’s libraries have wonderful Summer Reading programs for the children, tweens, and teens in their communities. However, there is one segment of the community that is often overlooked: those unable to read standard print due to a physical disability.  Many of these folks use the Talking Book Service (TBS), but they would also like to participate in community activities if they had access to the same titles other readers enjoy.

That hurdle can now be overcome with the lists of Braille and audio books available through the Talking Book Service.  These lists were developed to support the 2017 theme “Build a Better World” and books are listed by age group.  All audio titles on the list are available from the Idaho TBS, and Braille titles can be ordered from the Utah Talking Book Service via an agreement with Idaho’s TBS. Users must be eligible and registered to use the Idaho TBS, but library staff can download applications and certify applicants are eligible.

Teachers from the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind are encouraging their students throughout the state to participate in Summer Reading at their local libraries. If any students ask about your Summer Reading programs, please welcome them and consider ways you can recognize them for reading over the summer.
